š AI experts reject AI advancement?

šØ Our Report ā Three highly influential figures in the US AI industryāEric Schmidt (ex-Google CEO), Alexandr Wang (Scale AI CEO), and Dan Hendrycks (Director of the Center for AI Safety)āhave published a policy paper, titled āSuperintelligence Strategy,ā arguing that the US should not pursue a āManhattan Projectā-style approach (a concentrated, all-out effort, similar to one the US took to develop the worlds first atomic bomb in the ā40s) to developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), suggesting they pursue a significantly different strategy instead.
š Key Points:
The US government announced an initiative to aggressively pursue AGI to achieve global dominance and compete with China, but Schmidt et al. think this will trigger an extreme retaliation (possibly a cyber attack).
They believe other nations (especially China) would view this āManhattan Projectā approach as hostileālikening it to global powers seeking dominance over nuclear weaponsāwhich could trigger an AI arms race.
Instead of āwinning the AGI raceā, they introduced a new conceptāMutual Assured AI Malfunctionāa defensive strategy whereby the US stops others from creating AGI and proactively disables threatening AI.
š Relevance ā This paper demonstrates a significant shift in how AI experts, policy, and industry leaders are seeing the advancement of AI, as concerns grow over the risks of AGIāSchmidt, in particular, has previously been very vocal about the need for the US to aggressively develop advanced AI to compete with China, especially after DeepSeek released R1āso this radically different change in stance will undoubtedly carry a lot of clout with the US government.
Should the US take a defensive approach to AGI or remain determined to beat China? |

šµļø UK drops OpenAI-Microsoft probe

šØ Our Report ā The UK competition watchdogāCompetition and Markets Authority (CMA)āhas dropped its investigation into the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI after raising concerns in 2023 that the partnership could āpotentially impact competition in the emerging market.ā
š Key Points:
The CMA opened its investigation after Microsoft heavily influenced OpenAIās decision to rehire recently fired CEO Sam Altman, concerned that it had increased its control over OpenAIās commercial policy.
However, it concluded that while Microsoft "exerts a high level of influence" over OpenAI, the āchange of control has not happened,ā and the partnership remains the same, so it ādoesnāt qualify for review."
It also suggested that recent developments have actually weakened Microsoft's influenceāthey recently renegotiated their cloud computing agreement, meaning Microsoft is no longer OpenAIās exclusive cloud provider.
š Relevance ā Critics have suggested that the CMAās rather sudden decision to dismiss the investigation (after reviewing the case for over a year) comes as the UK government recently instructed its regulators to find ways to stimulate economic growth, which coincided with the abrupt firing of the existing CMA chairāMarcus Bokkerink (who initiated the OpenAI/Microsoft investigation)āand subsequent hiring of ex-head of UK Amazon, Doug Gurr, who is likely to bring a more commercial angle to decisions.

š¤ $20K for OpenAI AI agents?
According to reports, OpenAI is planning to reveal a new line of āspecialized,ā professional AI agents targeted at businesses that want to scale efficiency, which will cost around $20,000 p/m.
These agents will work independently, be able to handle complex, high-value tasksālike software development and advanced researchāwith minimum human input, and even take over entire workflows.
OpenAI is likely doing this to bolster revenue as it struggles to recuperate the $5B loss it suffered last year, although the hefty $$$ tag could be an issue, as the likes of DeepSeek launch much cheaper models.
