China Challenges NVIDIA’s Global Dominance?
🚨 Our Report
Chinese FinTech company, Ant Group—which is behind China’s most dominant mobile payment platform and is backed by Alibaba founder Jack Ma—has developed a new, cost-effective AI training technique that utilizes a blend of Chinese and US AI chips to improve AI model training, while slashing costs.
🔓 Key Points
Ant Group used chips from Alibaba and Huawei, alongside chips from US-based AMD, to train its AI models, which reduced computing costs by 20% while maintaining a performance equal to NVIDIA chips.
This method uses the Mixture of Experts (MoE) approach—recently popularized by Google and DeepSeek—to break tasks into small, specialized parts which increases efficiency with less computational power.
While Ant Group still uses NVIDIA chips for some of its projects, its dual-chip approach is positioning it as a formidable competitor in the global AI race, which is shaped by self-reliance and efficiency.
🔐 Relevance
This shift towards leveraging Chinese AI chips will diversify supply chains, lessen dependence on market leader NVIDIA, allow China to progress with its AI advancements amid tight, US-imposed AI chip restrictions, and demonstrate that AI models don’t need to be that costly to train.

🚨 Our Report
OpenAI is changing its leadership team, with major changes expected to affect the role of its current CEO, Sam Altman.
🔓 Key Points
Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, will now oversee day-to-day operations, international expansion plans, and key partnerships with the likes of Microsoft and Apple.
Lightcap taking on more will allow Altman to focus on “research and product efforts,” with rumors he’s working on specialized agents, which include a "high-income knowledge worker" and a software developer.
Alongside these leadership changes, OpenAI has also promoted Mark Chen (previously Senior VP of Research) to Chief Research Officer, and Julia Villagra (previously VP of people) to Chief People Officer.
🔐 Relevance
These leadership changes come after OpenAI lost several key people in September—namely, CTO Mira Murati (who abruptly left to launch her own start-up, and will not be replaced), Chief Research Officer, Bob McGrew, and VP of Post-Training, Barret Zoph—and also as the company prepares to restructure from a non-profit to a for-profit.

South Korean AI chip start-up, FuriosaAI (founded by June Paik, who has previously worked for AMD) has rejected an $800M acquisition offer from Meta in favor of developing and producing its own AI chips.
According to insider reports, it wasn’t the $800M that Meta was offering that caused negotiations to break down, it was disagreements over post-acquisition business strategy and organizational structure.
This comes as Meta has been desperately trying to reduce its reliance on NVIDIA for AI chips, and revealed its own, custom chip, last year, vowing to invest up to $65B to support its AI initiatives.
