🤯 Google building AI to simulate real life?

🚨 Our Report — Google is forming a new team that will work on developing AI models that can replicate real-world, physical environments, advancing progress towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which is AI that can complete tasks better than humans can.

🔓 Key Points:

• Tim Brooks—who co-led the development of OpenAI’s video generator, Sora, and quit OpenAI to join Google’s research lab, Google DeepMind, in October—will lead the new initiative.

• The project will leverage the work already done on Gemini (Google’s flagship AI models for text and image generation/analysis), Veo (Google’s video generator), and Genie (which can simulate playable 3D environments).

• The team’s goal is to advance “world models,” which are computational frameworks that help AI systems simulate real-world scenarios eg. Autonomous vehicles use them to imitate road conditions.

🔐 Relevance — This comes as a flurry of AI startups, like World Labs (founded by the ‘Godmother of AI’, Fei Fei Li, who recently successfully raised $230M), Decart, and Odyssey, all race to develop Large World Models, as they believe this breakthrough could transform multiple industries—from film and gaming to driving and robotics—although there are concerns it could lead to job losses, especially in the creative industries, as a recent study has estimated that over 100,000 US film, television, and animation jobs will be disrupted by AI, by 2026, although most startups are insisting they will collaborate with creatives, not replace them.

🫨 NVIDIA reveals its real-world models

🚨 Our Report — Following on from the above news story, at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2025) NVIDIA revealed a family of open-source, world models—Cosmos World Foundation Models (Cosmos WFMs)---that will allow developers to create and refine advanced AI systems for physics-based, synthetic data generation for AI training, robotics, and autonomous vehicles (AVs).

🔓 Key Points:

• Cosmos WFMs can simulate real-world scenarios—like warehouse environments—and give developers tools to generate, process, and test data in these environments, reducing reliance on real-world data collection.

• A tokenizer processes video and image data quicker than current methods and a curator prepares datasets in less time, so it’s quicker and easier to develop, test, and improve AI systems for complex physical tasks. 

• However, one lawsuit has already alleged that NVIDIA trained these models on copyrighted YouTube videos, but NVIDIA says they used data from “public and private sources” which is “consistent with the law”.

🔐 Relevance — Cosmos is available from Hugging Face, NVIDIA’s API, and GitHub, and companies like Uber, Agility Robotics, and XPENG are already piloting the models to advance the development of autonomous driving, while others such as Waabi, Wayve, and Fortellix, are using them to train robots to operate in real-world environments.

🫢 Apple rectifies embarrassing AI blunder

• After Apple launched its Apple Intelligence-powered notification summaries (in beta) in December, UK news publication, BBC News, complained that it had incorrectly summarized a news story.

• The publication then found it had named the World Darts Champion before the event had started, falsely said that Rafael Nadal was gay, and had “completely contradicted original BBC content.”

• Following this, Apple has confirmed it will release an update “in the coming weeks” that “will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence.”
