Google’s Gemini Can See?

🚨 Our Report

Google has started rolling out new AI features for Android smartphones that integrate ‘Project Astra’ capabilities with Gemini, to allow Gemini to “see” (in real-time) what’s on a user’s screen and answer questions about it.

🔓 Key Points

  • Google first announced Project Astra at the Mobile World Conference (MWC) last year, demonstrating how it could integrate with Gemini and power AI features like screen sharing and live video streaming.

  • It’s also introducing an Astra-powered feature that allows Gemini to interpret the camera feed and answer questions: Eg. A user could use their front-facing camera and ask Gemini to help them choose a paint color.

  • But instead of a big, flashy launch, Google appears to be rolling out the new features to users, slowly, with one user showing how Gemini could summarize what was on his screen and engage in a contextual discussion.

🔐 Relevance

The integration of Project Astra into Gemini puts Google ahead of some of its main competitors, namely Amazon with its upcoming AI Alexa Plus upgrade and Apple with its new, AI-powered Siri (which are both expected to be able to do similar things when they eventually launch), except Google’s features are seemingly ready now, whereas Amazon’s and Apple’s? Well, your guess is as good as mine…

🚨 Our Report

Cloudflare—a global internet network service—has launched a new tool, called AI Labyrinth, which is designed to stop “misbehaving” web bots from scraping websites for training data without permission, by trapping them in an AI labyrinth.

🔓 Key Points

  • Most websites have a robots.txt file—a set of rules that defines what bots can/can’t do—but recently AI companies—notably Anthropic and Perplexity—have been ignoring these rules and scraping data for training purposes.

  • When AI labyrinth detects a bot that’s ignored the robots.txt, it lures them into a tangled ‘labyrinth’ of fake, AI-generated web pages to “slow down, confuse, and waste resources” of the company in charge of the bot.

  • Cloudflare believes that AI-generated honeypot pages are a better strategy for combatting “misbehaving” bots because blocking them just encourages them to switch tactics and continue unlawfully scraping data.

🔐 Relevance

Cloudflare’s bot-fighting strategy is actually double-pronged: The AI labyrinth will waste the time and resources of the companies who are taking data without permission, but it will also cause “model collapse” which happens when an AI model is trained on AI-generated content, significantly degrading the quality of its responses.

  • Following the announcement last week that it was releasing an AI-powered search feature for its chatbot, Claude, reports have revealed that Anthropic will use the search engine—Brave Search—as its search index.

  • This comes after one of Anthropic’s main rivals—Mistral—announced, just last month, that it was using Brave Search to power its own chatbot (Le Chat) AI search feature, to return live web results.

  • While many AI firms like to keep the details of their newest AI features firmly under wraps, it’s known that OpenAI uses Microsoft’s Bing search engine to power its AI search feature (along with other unknown sources).
