Huawei Fills Nvidia Void

🚨 Our Report

Huawei Technologies is stepping up to fill China's AI chip void after U.S. trade restrictions barred Nvidia from selling to Chinese customers. The Chinese tech giant plans to begin mass shipments of its new 910C AI processor next month, offering performance comparable to Nvidia's H100 chip.

🔓 Key Points

  • Huawei's new 910C chip combines two 910B processors to achieve performance comparable to Nvidia's H100, with mass shipments beginning in May 2025 after some initial deliveries.

  • Nvidia is taking a write-off of up to $5.5 billion for inventory in its fiscal first quarter after the Trump administration required export licenses for its H20 processors destined for China.

  • Huawei plans to release its next-generation Ascend 920 chip later this year, reportedly offering performance comparable to Nvidia's H20, with China's SMIC handling manufacturing despite yield challenges.

🔐 Relevance

As U.S. restrictions create a vacuum in China's massive tech market, domestic alternatives are emerging that could permanently alter market dynamics. For investors, Nvidia's 28% stock decline year-to-date reflects serious concerns about its future growth potential in one of the world's largest markets. For the broader tech industry, this accelerates China's push toward semiconductor self-sufficiency, potentially creating two distinct AI hardware ecosystems globally.

🚨 Our Report

Google is paying Samsung "enormous sums" monthly to preinstall its Gemini AI app on devices, according to court testimony revealed during the ongoing Justice Department antitrust case, despite similar payment practices being ruled illegal twice before.

🔓 Key Points

  • The contract, which began in January 2025, includes fixed monthly payments to Samsung for each device preinstalling Gemini, plus a percentage of Google's ad revenue from the app, according to Peter Fitzgerald, Google's VP of platforms and partnerships.

  • Between 2020-2023, Google previously paid Samsung $8 billion for the default placement of Google Search, Play Store, and Google Assistant, before these practices were found to violate antitrust laws.

  • The payments come after two separate legal rulings against Google - one finding its search engine default payments illegal, and another ruling against its Android app store monopolization.

🔐 Relevance

This aggressive move by Google shows how desperately big tech companies are fighting for AI dominance, even willing to use tactics already deemed illegal. It highlights the massive financial stakes in the AI race and raises serious questions about fair competition in the emerging AI market, especially as these default installations can significantly influence which AI assistants become mainstream.

  • Instagram will now require teens to get parental approval to change their age from under 18 to 18 or older, part of a broader push by Meta to improve online safety for minors.

  • The platform will use AI and other tools to detect when users may be lying about their age and will prompt verification through ID uploads or video selfies.

  • These changes come as Meta faces increasing regulatory pressure and lawsuits over how its platforms impact teen mental health and safety.
