NVIDIA’s 3rd export workaround

🚨 Our Report

NVIDIA is reportedly about to launch a new, cheaper AI chip, specifically for China, after its most recent, most advanced AI chip (H20) faced US export restrictions.

🔓 Key Points

  • The new chip will have simpler manufacturing requirements and a weaker specification, to align with US chip export restrictions, meaning NVIDIA could potentially start mass production as early as next month.

  • Although it will be part of NVIDIA’s Blackwell range, the new chip is expected to be between $6,500 and $8,000, which is cheaper than the export-restricted H20 chip, which is between $10,000 and $12,000.

  • This will be NVIDIA’s third attempt to meet export restrictions, and on top of this challenge, it’s also attempting to take on its biggest rival, Chinese-based Huawei, which is about to ship a new chip—Ascend 910D.

🔐 Relevance

The new chip comes as NVIDIA desperately tries to cling on to its market share in China: Before 2022 (when the US export restrictions first came in), it had a 95% share of the market. Now, it has just 50%. China is a huge market for NVIDIA, with 13% of its revenue coming from Chinese tech firms, which explains why CEO Jenson Huang has recently blasted the export restrictions, calling them “a failure,” and warning US government that they will just push local chipmakers to develop their own alternatives, advancing China’s progress in the AI race.

🚨 Our Report

According to a recently released research paper (published in the journal, Nature), Microsoft’s latest AI system—named Aurora—can forecast and predict weather events more quickly and more accurately than traditional meteorological forecasting methods.

🔓 Key Points

  • Aurora has been trained on over 1M hours of forecasts, simulations, and satellite, radar, and ground station data and can accurately predict "air quality, ocean waves, tropical cyclone tracks, and high-resolution weather.”

  • Aurora predicted the Philippines' “Typhoon Doksuri” 4 days in advance (beating expert predictions). It also beat the National Hurricane Center's five-day cyclone predictions and predicted the major 2022 Iraq sandstorm.

  • Microsoft says the model is highly efficient to run and can generate forecasts in seconds, as opposed to the hours, traditional systems—which use legacy, supercomputer-based hardware—usually take.

🔐 Relevance

Microsoft has made Aurora open-source and publicly available and plans to incorporate it into its MSN weather app, so it will provide hourly forecasts, even including detailed cloud coverage updates.

  • OpenAI is planning to open its first office in Seoul, South Korea, to meet increasing demand for its ChatGPT models—South Korea has the second-largest amount of paying subscribers (after the USA).

  • The Korean office comes after it recently opened offices in Japan and Singapore, and OpenAI is already recruiting employees, with more details to be revealed in the upcoming months.

  • It’s also developing partnerships with South Korean firms, and has revealed it will expand its partnership with South Korean mobile-messaging app, KakaoTalk (which is used by 90% of the population).
