OpenAI competes with Google Shopping

🚨 Our Report

OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT search feature to include a shopping feature that will make it "simpler and faster to find, compare, and buy products in ChatGPT."

šŸ”“ Key Points

  • When a user asks a shopping-related query (eg. ā€œBest espresso machines under $200ā€), ChatGPT will display product cards with images, prices, star ratings, and links to websites where they can buy the product.

  • It’s initially being tested with fashion, beauty, home, and electronic goods, and OpenAI plans to integrate its ChatGPT memory feature to reference previous chats and provide more personalized shopping experiences.

  • Alongside this update, ChatGPT will now also display trending searches when a user starts typing a question (like Google’s autocomplete feature) and enable users to use WhatsApp to get answers from ChatGPT.

šŸ” Relevance

This new shopping feature is a direct challenge to Google’s shopping feature, which has been criticized for prioritizing the products that pay for ad space over the most relevant products available—diluting the quality of its recommendations—so it will be interesting to see how OpenAI’s shopping feature compares, as OpenAI has established that its shopping results are completely organic (they’re based on available third party data like reviews, pricing, product descriptions), and its product recommendations are not sponsored, meaning OpenAI will not receive any commission for the products it displays.

Apple’s Starlink Update Sparks Huge Earning Potential

Apple just secretly added Starlink satellite support to iPhones through iOS 18.3.

One of the biggest potential winners? Mode Mobile.

Mode’s EarnPhone already reaches +45M users who have earned over $325M, and that’s before global satellite coverage. With SpaceX eliminating "dead zones" worldwide, Mode's earning technology can now reach billions more in unbanked and rural populations worldwide.

Their global expansion is perfectly timed, and you still have time to invest in their pre-IPO offering at just $0.26/share.

Mode’s recent 32,481% revenue growth and their newly reserved Nasdaq ticker $MODE puts them one step closer to a potential IPO.

🚨 Our Report

Chinese e-commerce and tech giant, Alibaba, has released a third-generation family of eight (open-source) AI reasoning models—named Qwen3—which it says matches, if not exceeds, the capabilities of some of the top models around, including DeepSeek’s R1 and OpenAI’s o1.

šŸ”“ Key Points

  • All Qwen3 models have hybrid reasoning, so users can toggle between ā€œthinkingā€ (which takes longer to respond, and is suitable for complex queries) and ā€œnon-thinkingā€, which is quicker, for everyday tasks.

  • They all support 119 languages, and each model was trained on a dataset of nearly 36 trillion raw data points, including data from textbooks, ā€œquestion-answer pairs,ā€ code snippets, and AI-generated data.

  • According to Alibaba, the largest model (Qwen3-235B-A22B) outperforms DeepSeek’s R1 and OpenAI’s o1 on key benchmarks, and other models matched or even exceeded in areas like coding and math.

šŸ” Relevance

Despite efforts by the US to prevent the exportation of advanced AI chips to China—to slow progress and maintain its global leadership position in AI—the release of Alibaba’s Qwen3 and DeepSeek’s R1 (with R2 expected to arrive shortly) shows that Chinese tech firms are still progressing and achieving groundbreaking results, and reflects a trend for businesses to build their own AI tools, using open-source models, like Qwen3, vs using closed-models like those from OpenAI and Anthropic.

  • Gamified language-learning platform, Duolingo, is planning to become ā€œAI-firstā€ by not hiring contractors who do the ā€œwork that AI can handle,ā€ and prioritizing future job candidates who have experience using AI.

  • This was revealed in a company-wide email, and co-founder and CEO—Luis von Ahn— was quick to reassure his staff that ā€œDuolingo will remain a company that cares deeply about its employees.ā€

  • He said the new strategy ā€œisn’t about replacing Duos with AIā€ but about removing bottlenecks so employees can ā€œfocus on creative work and real challengesā€ to help the start-up get closer to its mission.
