🚨 OpenAI’s ex-top researcher subpoenaed

OpenAI’s ex-top researcher subpoenaed

🚨 Our Report — One of OpenAI’s top former researchers, Alec Radford, who helped develop some of OpenAI’s biggest, most groundbreaking technology (including GPT, the technology behind ChatGPT, Whisper, a speech recognition model, and DALL-E, an image generator) was subpoenaed last week by the US District Court, for the Northern District of California, as part of a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI.

🔓 Key Points:

  • Radford—who quit OpenAI last year, after 8 years, to focus on his own research—wrote the famous research paper "Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT)," which is at the core of OpenAI’s ChatGPT models.

  • The case—filed by book authors including Paul Tremblay, Sarah Silverman, and Michael Chabon—accuses OpenAI of infringing on author copyrights by using their books to train AI models without consent or attribution.

  • Besides Radford, Dario Amodei and Ben Mann—who both left OpenAI to create Anththropic—have also been subpoenaed, with a District Judge ruling they must “submit to hours of questioning” about their work at OpenAI.

🔐 Relevance — Despite the numerous ongoing copyright lawsuits that OpenAI has been slapped with over the last two years—all accusing the start-up of using copyrighted materials to train AI models without consent or fair attribution—OpenAI still maintains that its “use of copyrighted data for training falls under fair use” arguing that it’s impossible to develop highly advanced AI models without accessing a large pool of publicly available data, which will inevitably includes some copyrighted material.

🔥 Amazon developing ‘R1-like’ model

Amazon developing ‘R1-like’ model

🚨 Our Report — Amazon is reportedly developing a new AI model that has advanced reasoning capabilities—similar to OpenAI’s o-3mini and DeepSeek’s R1—which allows it to “think through” problems and queries, making it more reliable in areas like math, coding, and science.

🔓 Key Points:

  • The new model is expected to take a more “hybrid” approach—similar to Anthropic’s recently released Claude 3.7 Sonnet—and will provide both quick answers as well as slower, more “thought-through” ones.

  • Amazon’s AGI division has been tasked with the development of the new model, and it could launch as early as June under Amazon’s Nova series of AI models, which it introduced in December.

  • The team's goal for the new model is for it to become one of the top 5 AI models in classic benchmark tests like SWE and AIME, which are designed to test an AI model’s coding and math skills.

🔐 Relevance — Amazon is also (reportedly) aiming to compete in the AI reasoning model market by making its Nova reasoning model more cost-efficient—and therefore cheaper for consumers to use—than the reasoning models already out there, after DeepSeek shook the AI industry by training R1 for just $6M (which was about 80x cheaper than OpenAI’s o1).

Court rejects Musk’s OpenAI case?

  • District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has denied Elon Musk’s plea to stop OpenAI from transforming into a for-profit entity, because he failed to provide enough evidence to support his case.

  • However, she has agreed to look into Musk’s accusations about OpenAI’s “unlawful” transition plan, as “harm is incurred when public $$$ is used to fund a non-profit’s conversion into a for-profit.”

  • In response, Musk’s lawyers are looking forward to confirming that OpenAI “accepted Musk’s charitable contributions knowing they had to be used for the public’s benefit rather than [CEO Sam Altmans’] enrichment.”
