🧬 OpenAI model increases human lifespan?

OpenAI’s new model: Increase human lifespan?

🚨 Our Report — OpenAI has been working with a longevity research start-up—Retro Biosciences—to build and train an AI model, called GPT-4b, to try and extend the human lifespan by 10 years.

🔓 Key Points:

  • OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, is Retro’s biggest investor (having previously given it $180M of his own funds in 2023), and the project started a year ago after Retro approached OpenAI about a collaboration.

  • GPT-4b has been trained to suggest ways of re-engineering Yamanaka proteins (which, when added to human skin cells, morph into young-seeming stem cells) which is a step towards building organs and replacement cells.

  • The suggestions given by GPT-4b—which was trained on protein sequence examples and information on which proteins interact—reportedly made the Yamanaka proteins 50x more effective.

🔐 Relevance — AI’s first foray into science came from Google, which was awarded the Nobel-Prize for developing AlphaFold—which uses AI to predict the shape of proteins—last year, but this (if reports are to be believed), is the first time we’ve heard that AI models can perhaps deliver groundbreaking, unexpected scientific results, and has the potential to reshape scientific discovery, which could represent another step on the road towards Artificial General Intelligence.

Does AI have the potential to increase human lifespan by 10 years, or is it just hype?

🥊 Perplexity takes on LinkedIn with acquisition

Perplexity takes on LinkedIn with acquisition

🚨 Our Report — AI-powered search engine start-up, Perplexity, has just acquired the professional networking platform (and direct LinkedIn rival), Read.cv.

🔓 Key Points:

  • As part of the acquisition, Read.cv will stop operating this week, its three-person team will join Perplexity, and users will have until May 16th to export their profile, posts, and message data.

  • Although Perplexity hasn’t confirmed its specific plans, it’s expected that it will integrate Read.cv’s networking features to enhance its AI capabilities, pitting itself against established platforms, like LinkedIn.

  • The Read.cv team is “thrilled to join the Perplexity design and engineering team as they have “long admired Perplexity” and believe “great things happen when the world’s knowledge is made more open.

🔐 Relevance — This latest acquisition is Perplexity’s third since 2023, when they acquired AI startup, Spellwise, and then Carbon—which connected AI systems with external data sources—and highlights its commitment to expanding its ecosystem of tools and dominance in the tech industry, while undoubtedly pleasing VC backers, who are looking for tangible returns.

🚀 OpenAI’s o3 mini debuting soon

  • Following reports in December that OpenAI was testing two new AI reasoning models—o3 and o3 mini—CEO, Sam Altman, has confirmed that, following feedback, they will be releasing o3 mini in “a couple of weeks.”

  • o3 mini has been designed to ‘reason’ through more complex tasks and reportedly performs better than its predecessor (o1) in areas like science, math, and coding, which AI models traditionally struggle with.

  • This comes just one week after OpenAI released ‘Tasks,’ a feature for ChatGPT that is capable of performing tasks like creating to-do lists and setting reminders, designed to compete with Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s, Alexa.

  • Social platform, Brand24, was experiencing low conversion volumes on its sign-up form, so turned to AI-powered user behavior analysis to see why.

  • The AI analysis confirmed that a promo code was causing confusion at a key conversion point, and users were suffering from decision paralysis.

  • So, they removed distractions, reduced the signup form to just two fields, and added social proof by displaying real-time sign-up numbers.

  • As a result, conversions increased from 2.56% to 7.42% (a nearly 300% increase) which cascaded through their funnel, tripling their sales.
