Shocking Chinese AI Censorship Model Leaked

Shocking Chinese AI Censorship

🚨 Our Report

A leaked database (found by security researcher NetAskari) has revealed that China has built a sophisticated AI system that’s been trained—on over 133,000 pieces of content, with the last data entry made as recently as December—to automatically detect and flag content that is considered to be ‘sensitive’ by the Chinese government, in an attempt to leverage AI to censor and repress ‘unwanted’ public opinion.

🔓 Key Points

  • The AI model is said to work similarly to ChatGPT, with users prompting it to assess and rank content for sensitivity, flagging sensitive content as “highest priority,” which requires immediate attention.

  • Samples from the 133,000 data points reveal that the type of content China deems unacceptable includes anything related to politics (especially Taiwanese), the military, poverty, pollution, and food safety standards.

  • According to experts, the model doesn’t just look for ‘sensitive’ keywords, it’s designed to understand context and nuance and detect subtle opinions and criticism, not just blatant violations.

🔐 Relevance

The leaked dataset reveals that the AI systems goal is to support ‘public opinion work’ —which is the Chinese government’s word for censorship and propaganda—and something that a UC Berkeley researcher, who specializes in Chinese censorship has called “clear evidence” that the Chinese government is using AI to “improve the efficiency and granularity of state-led information control.”

🚨 Our Report

On Tuesday, OpenAI launched its “most advanced image generator yet” —which is capable of producing” precise, accurate, photorealistic outputs”—and already social media is flooded with images and memes, generated by the new model, in the style of Studio Ghibli the famous Japanese animation studio which is behind films like “Spirited Away,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and “The Boy and the Heron.”

🔓 Key Points

  • Since it launched, social media has been overwhelmed with Studio Ghibli-style AI-generated images of everyone from Elon Musk and President Trump to characters from The Lord of the Rings.

  • Users are uploading existing images and asking ChatGPT to recreate them in the Studio Ghibli style, with even OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, changing his X profile picture to one of himself in the Studio Ghibli style.

  • When OpenAI originally launched the new image generator, they said it would be available to all users soon, but due to the popularity and amount of people using it, they’ve had to delay the rollout.

🔐 Relevance

While these AI-generated images and memes are causing great hilarity across social media, it has re-triggered the debate around copyright laws: According to lawyers, ‘style’ isn’t explicitly protected by copyright, so OpenAI isn’t technically breaking the law by allowing its AI model to copy the Studio Ghibli style, however, it’s also possible that OpenAI has achieved this likeness by training the image generator on material from Ghibli’s films, without permission (Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has previously expressed strong disapproval of AI-generated animation)

Is OpenAI violating copyright law by allowing its image generator to copy the style of Studio Ghibli?

  • Amazon is expanding its Alexa Fund—which it originally started in 2015 to help early-stage voice startups—into AI, and plans to invest more in AI startups and areas like smart agents and AI architecture.

  • So far, the fund has invested in NinjaTech AI (chatbot that does coding and meeting scheduling), Hedra (images/video/audio generator), Ario (family management app), and HeyBoss (prototypes games/websites/apps).

  • For Amazon, these startups become a way to put its cloud and AI stack to use, and many will also get early access to things like private APIs so they can become a testing ground.
