AI stocks were boosted by Trump’s quick reversal of the Biden policies. Citing stifling innovation the President vowed to invest heavily in the space. In other news, Apple continued to drop after being downgraded by Loop Capital. This allowed NVIDIA to take advantage of the situation and become the largest company in the world. Apple has fallen more than 14% since it peaked on Dec 26th last year.

 Trump expedites AI expansion?

🚨 Our Report — One day into his presidency, Donald Trump announced “the largest AI infrastructure project in history,” which is a $500B joint venture—called Stargate—between OpenAI, Oracle, Softbank, and others (including Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Arm), that will build a network of data centers across the US, starting in Texas and expanding into other states.

🔓 Key Points:

  • Trump hinted that he would use “emergency declarations” to accelerate the development of the data centers, as “we have to get this stuff built,” and plans to “make it possible to get that production done very easily.”

  • His announcement follows one he made, earlier this month, about a $20B commitment made by UAE-based company (and Trump ally)—DAMAC Properties—to build data centers across the US.

  • OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle all praised Trump for making “the most important project of this era” possible, but initial plans for Stargate date back to Biden, with 10 data centers already in construction.

🔐 Relevance — This comes just one day after Trump revoked Biden’s 100-page EO on AI safety standards, and further compounds his priority to maintain a competitive edge in the race against China (and others) to develop advanced AI.

⛓️‍💥 OpenAI and Microsoft break ties?

🚨 Our Report — Following the announcement of the joint venture between OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle (called Stargate, see above), OpenAI and Microsoft have jointly announced that Microsoft will no longer be the “exclusive provider” of compute capacity to OpenAI—to develop, train, and run their AI models—clearing the way for OpenAI to work with other compute providers (coincidentally, including Oracle).

🔓 Key Points:

  • Microsoft has insisted the new agreement will not change the “key elements” of its partnership with OpenAI—including access to its IP and revenue-sharing arrangements—and these will remain in place until 2030.

  • According to Microsoft, the change in the relationship simply means that when OpenAI needs additional compute, Microsoft will have the “right of first refusal” before OpenAI tries other providers.

  • OpenAI has also confirmed that it will continue to increase its compute consumption through Microsoft, having recently made “a new, large Azure commitment” for products and model training.

🔐 Relevance — Although the change in relationship seems amicable on the surface, over the last year, there have been signs of strain between Microsoft and OpenAI, with OpenAI blaming a lack of compute for delaying products, and Microsoft declaring OpenAI as a competitor and hiring Inflection (a direct OpenAI rival) CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, and staff, which reportedly angered OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman.

Is this the beginning of the end of Microsoft and OpenAI's partnership?

 Anthropic’s Claude gets 2-way voice

  • Thanks to a “surge in demand” over the last year, AI start-up, Anthropic, is planning to release a “two-way” voice mode for its chatbot, Claude, alongside a memory feature that allows it to “remember” past conversations.

  • Despite this, Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei, recently revealed that the surge in demand (particularly over the last 3 months) has exceeded their compute capacity, which will surely make it difficult to fulfill its plans.

  • And—even after successfully raising $13.7B (mainly from Amazon)—they suffered significant losses last year, but are reportedly in talks for further funding (around $2B) which has valued the company at $60B.
