Three of the world's biggest music labelsāUniversal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Musicāare having separate negotiations with two AI start-upsāUdio and Sunoāabout the possibility of licensing their music catalogs for AI music production and training.
Udio and Suno are both AI platforms that generate music from text prompts, enabling aspiring musicians to create new music recordings by just describing specific sounds, artists, or specific songs.
All three labels want license fees from Udio and Suno whenever music from their catalogs is used for either training or music production, and āa small amountā of equity in the start-ups.
To help detect when their music is being used, they also want the start-ups to develop fingerprint recognition and attribution technologies (similar to YouTube's content ID) that can track how and when songs are used.
These negotiations come nearly a year after all three labels sued Suno and Udio for copyright infringement, feeling that āAI companies must abide by laws that protect human creativity and ingenuity.ā However, Sudo and Udio argued that their use of copyrighted material fell under the āfair useā exemption to US copyright law (which allows copyrighted material to be used under specific circumstances). If these recent negotiations are successful, this could set a framework for how artists are fairly compensated by AI companies and could settle current and future copyright disputes.
